It was extremely late in the night, when Alice awoke from where she was sleeping upright in the Gryffindor Common Room. Her unfinished essay laying on the table and a book opened to page 224 in her lap. Yawning, she closed the book ready to head to her dorm, when her stomach rumbled. It was then she recalled not eating dinner - she had probably slept through it all. Now, she was paying the price. All these late nights trying to get her homework done was torture! She had two options. One- go to her dorm for a night's sleep or two - head for the kitches to grab a bite to eat. It was no use, her starving stomach won.
Alice gathered up her belongings and set them on the couch, making a mental note to stash them up in her dormitory when she returned. She pushed open the portrait of the fat lady, making sure not to rouse her from slumber and quickly walked down the corridor. The only light was coming from the candles lined along the walls of the castle. She wanted to take out her wand to provide more brightness, but didn't want to to chance it.
As she came to the hall that led to the kitchen, she smiled proudly. She hadn't crossed paths with Filch or Mrs.Norris! It was her lucky night! Reaching up, she tickled the pear and ducked inside as the portrait closed behind her. The kitchen was alive with house elves. All of them were scurrying about trying to prepare for the morning feast. She nearly fell over when they crowded around her, asking what it was she wanted. They were such loyal and considerate creatures that she felt bad many treated them with disrespect.
"I'll just have some leftovers of the dinner and pumpkin juice." she said, grinning and before she could say anything more, they scampered off to get her order together.
Fascinated, Alice walked over to one of the tables and sat down, waiting for her food patiently.
