| Location: The Owlry Date: 22nd September 1975 Status: Private Complete.
It was a cool morning, the brisk feeling of the cold finally beginning to descend and make its way through James' robe and his faded Gryffindor scarf as he glanced around for his owl. All around him, birds were arriving back from their night's hunts, beginning to doze off or finishing their captive meals, a soft cacophony of rustling feathers and clicking beaks accompanying low, gentle hoots. He had two letters clutched between his fingers, one a letter home, updating them on his progress at school and simply keeping in touch. The other...well...that was something different.
Before they'd gone to help Remus deal with his furry little problem last night, Sirius had decided to embark upon a crusade of merciless teasing that would have made even McGonagall blush (James still wasn't convinced that she could do anything but frown disapprovingly - he was sure it was the ginger newts). Apparently the boy had decided that James was acting all-too responsible these days, what with his rounds and his rotas and, as he'd put it, "the amount of time you've wasted with that Evans girl that could have been spent on more worthwhile endeavours". Of course, much to the boy's chagrin, any time he'd had with the girl recently hadn't been used for the usual one-sided (although he liked to convince himself that it went both ways) flirting, but for dealing with student problems, sorting out prefects, liaising with the staff and a whole host of other issues.
And the homework, oh Merlin, the homework. He would have thought that they'd be cut a little slack in their final year, but no. Apparently, the real world had other ideas, and they were called NEWTs. NEWTs, you see, were not fun, they were hard and gruelling and all those other adjectives James disliked. He'd been spoiled, he supposed, things had always come so naturally to him, so easily that he'd rarely had to truly apply himself. Even the OWLs, which were by far the most intensive periods of schooling he'd had in terms of study, had been completed with a modicum of ease in comparison to the others in his year. He excelled at subjects that most found difficult - Transfiguration being the obvious one. He smiled tiredly as he thought of the night before, three of the Marauders keeping the Wolf company in their animagus forms - their own, private secret and experience that bound them together more surely than any other tie of friendship could, than any bond of camraderie could glue.
Of course that companionship could backfire, especially amongst men, since he tended to actually listen to what his friends said (as opposed to most others), which was why Sirius had managed to hit a nerve with pinpoint precision, cutting through the haze of "Head James" as he was now known amongst the Marauders (well, by Sirius, and by proxy Peter) and making him send off an order to Zonko's for one of their deluxe troublemaker hampers. Guaranteed to send any teacher (or Slytherin upstart) into an early grave. He smiled again as he finally spied his owl, beckoning to her as he yawned. Over the years, he'd become used to these nights of no sleep after a full moon, but usually he took the time to get a couple of hours kip after making sure Madam Pomfrey collected Remus from the Shrieking Shack. Now, though, he was in the Owlry at a stupid time in the morning...and he couldn't help but wonder whose footsteps were echoing up the stairs...

| A yawn escaped her perfect lips as emerald eyes would peek through long, dark lashes. Lily Evans would always wake up before the rest of her dorm mates but now that she had her own room she wouldn’t disturb them. She had stayed up late last night working on her rounds for Head duties. A tired smile would peek its way through as her feet would lead the way. By now she could find her way around Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with her eyes closed. She had left her robes back in her room since she was only making a quick run to the Owlry. Lily had slipped into a comfortable pair of fitted jeans and a white turtle neck sweater to keep the morning chill out. Her long crimson locks would be thrown in a messy ponytail.
Lily would have assumed she was one of few people awake at this early hour. In her hand she had a letter clutched. The previous night after dinner she had received a letter from her mother. What she had found in the envelop had caused a grimace to spread on her features that night. Her older sister Petunia was marrying that tub of lard Veron Dursley. Of course she knew Petunia would rather Lily not even show up but her parents wanted her involved in the wedding. Reluctantly Petunia had made her a bridesmaid; her mother had made it seem her sister actually wanted her. Lily knew best. But for her parents she would agree to be in the wedding, fittings for her dress would be during her winter holidays and the wedding would be the following break. Thinking of her sister always put her in a foul mood. She would have sent the reply back the night before but something had come up and she couldn’t make it there. Which brought her to where she was now, walking towards the Owlry to deliver her unenthusiastic response.
It wouldn’t take long to reach there. In fact she found herself walking up the steps to the Owlry in no time at all. The click of her heels would echo on the cold stone steps. Her hand barely grazed the railing she was holding on to. Reaching the top she would pull open the door peeking around it. What met her gaze shocked her. James Potter stood there looking straight at her. Merlin was playing a cruel joke on her it seemed. It seemed she could never walk a few feet without bumping into him of all people. A tight smile would appear on those lips as she walked further inside. Her gaze would turn upwards to search for her own owl. Offhandedly she would greet him.
“I’m surprised Potter, I wouldn’t have taken you for a morning person.”
She didn’t mean for it to come off as snappish if she did. Then again her mood wasn’t because of him, it was because of her sister. Lily wouldn’t let James’ presence bother her that morning and she would try to remain civil.

| As much as he liked the fiery redhead, he didn't have the patience to retort wittily right now, and his shoulder was beginning to ache from where he was sure that Remus had thrown it out of joint a few hours ago when he'd been Prongs, wrestling with him in the Forest.
"Mmm," He grunted noncommitally as he palmed the Zonko's envelope with a quick flick of his wrist. It wouldn't do to have any witnesses to his little purchases right now, let alone Evans of all people. "I'm not. Morning, Lily." He replied, his voice deep and raspy from the lack of sleep he'd had recently. His owl landed on his forearm, waiting patiently as James tucked the letter to his parents into its messenger bag before he turned away from her. "What brings you here so early, thought you were on the night shift last night?"
He fished around in his pockets for the small bag of owl treats he'd bought with him, feeding one to the creature almost absently as he looked at her through ringed eyes. "I take it Sirius hasn't been pulling his weight with the Potions work?" He continued almost rhetorically, yawning again and hissing angrily at his owl as she nipped at his fingers, waiting for another treat. "Speaking of which, do you know what the class assignment is yet for today? I haven't had a chance to look over my notes, this Charms work has been kicking my arse."

| “I was but hadn’t had the chance to send my mum a reply last night to her letter. And according to her it’s quite urgent that I get back to her soon.”
Why was she explaining herself to him? Most likely because she was tired and didn’t think twice of it. Wouldn’t want to ruin Petunia’s extravagant plans, not like she cared all the much. In the end Petunia was still her sister and she would do this favor for her parents, not for her. Ever since she found out she was a witch, Petunia had labeled her a freak. And Veron had stayed far away from her the moment he walked into their house. Obviously Petunia had no qualms telling him; after all they were going to be married. She was losing herself in her thoughts and for a moment she forgot that James Potter was standing right there. Mentally she would shake her head and she would call for her own owl. It had been a gift to her for her birthday last year; smiling at the tawny owl she would place the letter in the holder. But her owl had other plans and had begun to poke around for her own treats. Smiling sweetly at her she would reach in her pocket to pull out a few, feeding them to the bird, lightly patting her head. For the most part she was done here when the owl took off to deliver the letter.
“You would be correct. When I get my hands on Black – “
Her words seemed to trail off after that as a thought struck her. Biting down on her lower lip she realized how that might sound. She didn’t want to be just another punch line. Then again James was different when his friends weren’t around, he seemed, normal almost? Her emerald green gaze would finally turn to him again as a brow would rise in curiosity. Why wasn’t she surprised by that?
“We were supposed to have the Introduction and chapters one and two in our text read for today’s class. The assignment is from the reading we had to do. If you haven’t read the material it will be quite difficult to do the assignment.”
With their NEWTs right around the corner their professors had been piling on the work. In a way it was a cruel test to weed out the stronger students from the weaker ones. The ones that somehow managed to scrape through would be prepared. The ones that were left behind would be the ones to suffer come the exams.

| James slipped the letter to Zonkos into his owl's messenger pouch while Lily was preoccupied with summoning her own, giving the creature one last treat and an affectionate kiss on the forehead before throwing his arm up, sending the bird soaring upwards and out of the structure. He watched its progress out through the large escape hole in the roof, still listening to Lily speak.
"Oh?" He asked, his eyes still trained on where Hermes had left, lingering for a few, final moments before returning his gaze to hers. "Is everything alright?" He couldn't help the small smile that crossed his tired features as he watched her interact with the small bird, the early morning sunlight that streamed in through the rafters making her outline glow against its luminescence, framing the two in a sort of halo that was both ethereal and beautiful.
"Hmm. Believe me, if he doesn't want to be found then he won't be." He rubbed his eyes and groaned as she related the assignment.
"Shit," He muttered under his breath. His potions work had been slipping over the last week, not least because of Moony's furry little problem, but also because of the increasing duties of being Head Boy, of the advent of the Quidditch season, of his attempts to balance both his responsibilities, his ever-frequent meetings with Dumbledore and his need to spend time with his friends. And his red-haired paramour, of course. He sighed lengthily, pinching the bridge of his nose with one hand rested on his hips. "Okay, looks like I'll be skipping breakfast again." He murmured, before glancing back up at her. "Thanks. How's your project coming along?"

| "In a matter of speaking. That is if you count having an older sister that's getting married."
Lily had been distracted for the brief moment which allowed that small piece of information to slip. Those that didn't know Lily well wouldn't even hear of her ever having a sister since she never mentioned her. What was wrong with her? Usually she was more guarded than this about giving information out to someone like James Potter. Somehow Lily would have to pull up her defenses around him but she was finding that increasing difficult. He was a different person entirely when it was just the two of them. Turning on her heel she glanced up towards a snowy white owl hoping that would distract her long enough to gain her senses. It hadn't of course. This was James - no - this was Potter. Potter. She had to remember that just because they were working together it didn't mean anything; when they would part ways that would be it. It was only a mask, he wasn't actually nice to her outside Head duties but she couldn't help but wonder. Stop being a ninny Lily found herself shouting in her mind as she mentally shook it. Realizing she had turned rather silent throughout the conversation she was able to catch bits and pieces of it. She couldn't look at him, which only threw her mind for a whirl it seemed so instead she would keep her gaze on the owl. Lily had to get through this.
"I figured as much where Black is concerned."
The colorful choice of language had caused her gaze to shift once more. The light had to be playing tricks on her mind. His owl was gone and there he stood completely at ease until the mention of their charms work. A smirk curled up at corners of her lips as her head tilted to the side.
"If you want to you can take a glance at my notes..."
Was she offering to help him? Had she lost her senses completely? Yes she had. That was the only explanation she could come up with. In the back of her mind she prayed that someone would interrupt them so that she might have a chance to regain them. For some reason her feet were like lead, refusing to move an inch, frozen. Lily had to run out of there but she just couldn't. She was rooted to the spot.
"Well I suppose - yours?"

| "Your sister's getting married, huh? I'd say congratulations, but you don't sound very happy about it. Come to think of it, I didn't know you even had a sister." He half-listened to her speak before her words suddenly clicked in his mind. Lily, offering to let him look at her notes?
Like, consentually?
He couldn't help the quirk of his eyebrow as it lifted in response, nor could he help the slight, almost-shy smile that flickered briefly as his hazel eyes locked with her own, bright green ones.
"I'd appreciate that, thank you." He said, his hands automatically going to his pockets. "I don't know how many more meals I can skip, in all honesty." He folded the bag of owl treats up neatly, placing them back inside the folds of his robes. Not for the first time, he thought on how utterly bizarre this situation was. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy getting on with Lily, far from it in fact, but he was used to the pattern they'd developed. He'd make some outlandish gesture towards asking her out, she'd threaten his life, and they'd repeat ad nauseum. This new habit they had of talking and getting along was slightly unsettling, but he found himself liking it more and more. The fact of the matter was, that despite his feelings for her he'd never actually tried to get to know her. Oh he'd offered to spend time with her, yes, but he'd never had the chance to just chat with her idly, not really talking about anything, but everything. He'd found over this past month, and with all the time he'd spent with her, that she was actually a very easy person to get along with, and despite not knowing her immensely well he was opening up more and more, dropping that act that he felt that he had to put on around her and others and simply being...James Potter.
Inwardly he shrugged. Sirius would kill him if he could hear his thought process.
"Mine's pretty much done, really." He said in a slightly bored affliction. "The content wasn't that challenging, and Black's a hard worker when she wants to be. We pretty much just got our separate parts done and we're combining them in class, shouldn't take much longer."

| "There isn't much to say about Petunia. We're related by blood and even that is hanging by a thread..."
Lily found her mind drifting off at the thought of her sister. She gave up trying to patch up the rocky relationship. Petunia wasn't all bad but ever since Lily became a freak she was an outcast. Her sister wanted nothing to do with her. Shunned by not just one world, both. The first week of school had been strange, especially where James Potter was concerned. How was she supposed to hate someone she assumed she knew but didn't? Well, she never hated him just sorely disliked him. But this wasn't the same James she had known these past six years. She thought she had him pinned to the last note, thought there was nothing past the exterior. Slowly she was finding another side to him, a side she had lost hope in ever discovering. After all, Remus had to see something in James and Lily found Remus pleasant company. Perhaps she would try to see what Remus saw. Her mind had been made up before she even realized. Their gazes met - emerald and chocolate molding into one. She had to turn away so she could nod her reply.
"It's really no trouble at all. Just bring them back in one piece."
Of course Sirius Black came to mind, the mutt he was, tearing through her notes and destroying them. Maybe that was a bit harsh but she honestly couldn't see that one ever maturing in the near future. This could work out, as long as he wouldn't ask her out. They could just be on a friendly basis, nothing more.
"My notes are back in my room though but I can get them to you before breakfast."
Lily would say in an offhanded manner as if the thought just occurred to her. There was no reason for her to stay in the owlry so why was she still there? Her feet seemed to be filled with led and she couldn't budge them even if she wanted to. She was rooted to the ground, the soft hooting sounds just above their heads.

| James nodded before deigning to pursue the topic of her sister any further. She obviously didn't want to talk about it, and in all honesty, he had no right to pry.
"Of course," He said, and then, as if reading her mind and with a slightly roguish grin. "I'm not Sirius." He yawned then, closing his eyes and placing his hand over his mouth as he did so. God, wasn't he tired. He'd have to have a word with Moony about his monthly jaunts out and about, perhaps try to do them at a more sociable hour. "That would be great, I'll walk back with you if you like?" He said, not really thinking about what he was saying.
"Um, I mean, just to keep you company. Not to come in your room or anything." He lamely tried to backtrack, but in all honesty, he was so exhausted that he couldn't find it in him to care about what he'd said. He shook his head, as if to clear the cobwebs before a thought suddenly struck him. "Oh, damn, I've got to go to the Hospital Wing before breakfast, could I meet you there or something?"
All this thinking about Remus and he'd forgotten their ritual of going to his bed before breakfast after the full moon. He didn't bang himself up nearly half as bad as he used to now he ran with Padfoot, Wormtail and Prongs, but there were still cuts and scrapes, there had to be. They were unregistered animagi after all, and it wouldn't do for Madam Pomfrey to click onto why Remus miraculously went through placid transformations now, after years of abuse.

| "Well then I have no worries about the safety of my notes, I believe they are in good hands."
If the Lily from just a few weeks ago had heard those words uttered from her own lips she would have been struck dead. This was James Potter and she didn't trust him as far as she could throw him. Lily had listened to his rambles and it seemed the more he tried to correct himself, the more jumbled the meaning. The smallest curl of her lips would indicate a smile as she held the chuckle back. She couldn't hide the amused sparkle in her emerald hues though. There was no need to question him further about it though. Lily didn't mind walking back to the Head's quarters by herself. In the back of her mind she couldn't help but feel that was for the best. After all, she needed to get away from him. The longer she would stay the more she lost a bit of her sanity. He was somehow able to cloud her mind, forget herself entirely. It was best to go their separate ways for the time being. She was just doing something nice, that was all, there was no meaning behind it. He was still Potter and she was Evans. This was a working relationship.
"That's fine, I'll just go grab them quickly. Shouldn't take long."
She had to wonder what he would be doing in the Hospital Wing this early in the day though. It wasn't her business nor would she ask him about it. Always the early bird she felt tired herself. James Potter just had that effect on her, that was the only explanation she would come up with at the moment.

| "Okay, sounds good." James replied, making a move to leave the Owlry. As pleasant as the company was, one could only stand around in bird droppings for so long without becoming nauseous. "I'll see you soon then." His eyes met hers for a brief, lingering moment before he smiled and made his way to the door.
"Oh and Lily?" He said, turning back as if he forgot something. "I really do appreciate it, thank you." He gave her a friendly wink, before setting off out of the door. Good hands, huh? He grinned to himself as he made his way down the long stone staircase, headed towards the Hospital Wing. Seems this day wouldn't be so bad after all.
